    Opiate Receptors and the Neurochemical Correlates of Pain, Volume V, documents the proceedings of the 3rd Congress of the Hungarian Pharmacological Society held in Budapest, 1979. The congress offered a good opportunity to stimulate discussions and exchange of ideas between scientists from various countries who approach the problem of narcotics and pain mechanisms in different ways. The 27 contributions in this volume have enriched knowledge in this rapidly expanding field of pharmacology. This volume begins with a discussion of opiate receptors. The results suggest the interaction of various morphine-like drugs with different opiate receptor populations. The existence in nerve tissue of specific opiate receptors binding morphine and other opioids has led to the assumption of endogenous ligand for opiate receptors. One section of the present volume is devoted to enkephalins and endorphins, their structure-activity relationships, interactions with transmitter and other systems, their behavioral effects, and to factors controlling their release. Some other aspects of nociception; the pathways involved in the mode of action of different types of analgesics, e.g. narcotics and non-narcotics; and their relations to inflammation and active substances, such as prostaglandins and substance P, are discussed from various aspects.

Prostaglandin research is an exciting and rapidly developing field in chemical and biological sciences. It is the recently discovered prostacyclin that has brought about a breakthrough in prostaglandin research giving new impetus to clinical investigation. This volume contains 22 papers read at the ""Prostanoids Symposium"" by participants from eight different countries. Numerous new data concerning the synthesis of prostacyclin and different stable prostacyclin analogues are presented. Besides the problems of synthetic chemistry, data are given about the pharmacological properties of these prostacyclin analogues, analyzing their effects on heat and smooth muscles.     Drugs and Driving is a compendium of papers from a symposium of the same title presented at the U.S. Transportation Research Board. This collection reviews the effects of five classes of drugs on driving (amphetamines, tranquilizers, barbiturates, narcotics, cannabis), the other studies being made on drugs and driving, as well as some countermeasure programs against drunk driving. The papers report that amphetamines can induce risky driving behavior, tranquilizers can increase traffic accident risks, barbiturates can degrade driving skills especially when the drug is combined with alcohol, while marijuana use can impair important driving skills. Another paper evaluates drug use and driving risk among high school students in Toronto: results show that the total effect of infrequent use of drugs on accidents is small compared to alcohol use. A study of out-patients in Finland notes that the combined used of alcohol and drugs tend to increase accident frequency. One paper refutes that Alcohol Safety Action Programs in the United States are ineffective.
