Douglas R. Sidell

Dr. Sidell is Associate Professor of Otolaryngology -Head and Neck Surgery at the Stanford University Medical Center, where he is a member of the Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology. Dr. Sidell's surgical practice focuses on the management of children with complex airway and pulmonary disorders, with a special interest in complex and revision airway reconstruction. His clinical interests also include the management of children with voice and swallowing disorders as well as congenital or acquired abnormalities of the larynx and trachea. He is the Director of the Pediatric Aerodigestive Center and the Pediatric Voice and Swallowing Clinics at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford. Dr. Sidell has authored or co-authored multiple peer-reviewed articles and abstracts which appear in top-tier medical publications. He is board-certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is a member of numerous organizations and societies, including the Stanford Maternal and Child Health Research Institute, the American Academy of Otolaryngology, American Broncho-Esophagological Association, and the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology.

Karthik Balakrishnan

Karthik Balakrishnan, MD, MPH is Associate Professor of Otolaryngology at Stanford University. His clinical practice focuses on complex pediatric airway reconstruction, voice and swallow disorders, and vascular anomalies. His research efforts center on innovative techniques in pediatric laryngeal and tracheal reconstruction, standardization of outcome measures for complex pediatric diseases, quality and value improvement in pediatric surgical care, improving teamwork and psychological safety in surgical care, and the role of implicit and cognitive bias in medical decision making and health care inequity.

Kara D. Meister

Kara D. Meister, MD, is a pediatric otolaryngologist and head & neck surgeon. She received her medical degree from Medical University of South Carolina and completed her otolaryngology residency at University of Pittsburgh. She completed a NIH funded fellowship in head and neck research at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Meister then went on to complete a pediatric otolaryngology fellowship at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. She is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology, Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology, at Stanford University. Dr. Meister’s research interest involves understanding the use of technology to diagnose and treat pediatric patients, specifically the use of point-of-care ultrasonography. Her clinical interests include airway evaluation and reconstruction, voice and swallowing problems, and treatment of patients with head and neck masses including thyroid nodules and cancer. She is Co-Director, Surgical, of the Children's Thyroid Center at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford and is a participating surgeon in the Aerodigestive and Airway Reconstruction Center at Stanford Children’s Health.

Chris Gralapp

Chris Gralapp is a board Certified Medical Illustrator who has produced thousands of medical and biological science illustrations, diagrams, and charts for medical doctors, biological scientists, and attorneys needing forensic illustrations for their legal work. She has also created thousands of illustrations for publishers, for medical and scientific research papers, and for museums such as the Smithsonian Institution. As a specialist, she concentrates above the shoulders—head and neck anatomy, surgery, neuroanatomy, and the special senses. She illustrates human anatomy, surgical technique, medical devices as well as conceptual cellular processes and molecular topics.
